PPW Food News

06 Jun 2014

Just over a week until PPW 2014 and we have all the information regarding the food options for registered walkers

And it's not good news for vegetarians - apart from the homemade bread (pictured) - baked in a wood-fired oven. One of the organisers, Paul Trudgill, says...

"First of all, we hit 1000 walkers this week, and closed registration. Which is pretty amazing - but because of so many walkers (and multiple routes) we don't have any food organised for when walkers finish. But almost all of the pubs on the route this year have something planned to stop people going hungry.

"All this food news is subject to availability - so anyone that medically needs food (after a few jars and some walking) shouldn't rely on one particular offer or another. Having said that, the pubs know how many walkers to expect, and have been preparing.

"So, where to start? Walkers setting off from The Sparrowhawk can get a pint and a bacon butty for £3.00. And then just up the road at The White Swan, the staff are preparing homemade sausages for homemade bread (pictured), all coming from that lovely wood-fired oven they have there now. If walkers visit their page here, the team at The White Swan have a message for them.

"The other half of the walkers, setting off from Barley? If they need breakfast they can get coffee, juices, or beer from The Pendle Inn - with bacon butties at £2.50 - between 10am & 12noon. After 12noon they will be doing chip butties and pie & peas at £3.50 - more info is on their page here.

"Going back to Fence - The Fence Gate have a BBQ from 11am - their award-winning Cumberland sausage with caramelised onions at £2.00, with an outdoor bar. Then at The Four Alls in Higham, they have their usual hog-roast (which is becoming a PPW tradition now) but this year it comes with an outdoor bar, which should be serving four different beers.

"Moving through Barley into Roughlee, The Bay Horse Inn are having a BBQ, also with an outdoor bar. Many of the pubs this year are having an outdoor bar, probably because of the amount of walkers that will need serving. Let's just pray for the good weather because the outdoor bars will be depending on it.

"Over to Blacko where we have another hog-roast at The Rising Sun, with an outdoor bar. Then across the field, The Cross Gaits Inn are having a BBQ, with an outdoor bar - and for walkers that like a little boogie, they have a band on from 2pm - Starting Fires."

"Then we have the Barrowford guantlet. At The Old Bridge Inn we have pie - which will be available for take-away, in case the pub is too crowded. After that it's The George & Dragon, who are just doing their regular menu - the favourites being mixed grill or lamb Henry - and they also have live music, with a selection of acoustic artists playing in the beer-garden from mid-afternoon onwards.

"Then down the road The White Bear, just like last year (when they seemed to have set a trend) are having a BBQ with an outdoor bar. And then we have The Bombay Lounge - same as last year - where walkers can pay a small entry fee, for a free drink and a mixed selection of starters."

"We'll keep walkers updated with any changes via social media. In other news - walkers can redeem their official Pendle Pub Walk Tshirt from Pendleside Hospice Reception tomorrow (Saturday 7th June) between 10am - 12noon. Which I urge people to do, so registration will be smoother on the day of the walk."

"Thank you for reading - and we'll look forward to seeing you all next weekend."
