Organisers of this year's Pendle Pub Walk have announced that the 2012 event is set to trounce all the previous events combined, in terms of funds raised for charity, in spite of the rainy weather
The 12-mile charity walk - organised by The Rotary Club of Burnley Pendleside to raise money for Pendleside Hospice - took place last Saturday, and saw some of the worst weather conditions ever experienced by Pendle Pub Walkers, in the 4 years the event has been running.
Graham Cullens, one of this year's walkers said... "We had a great time. As soon as we got wet we just said "Go for it!", then marched on and had a marvelous walk!"
PPW Grahame, organiser of the popular annual event, said "The rain was unbelievable. It was just showers all day, and when it rained, it really came down. Despite the weather, nearly all the pre-registered walkers turned up, as well as another 50 walkers who just showed up on the day and gave a donation to the hospice to get involved. And the feedback from the walkers was just wonderful again. Everyone had a fantastic time as always, but with the rainy weather, it was a case of enduring the walk this year as well as enjoying it."
He added, "We are so grateful to everyone involved. The walkers, the pubs, Pendleside Hospice, Moorhouses Brewery, Neil at The Sparrowhawk, all our supporters... I can't thank them enough for a great effort in making this the highest fund-raising Pendle Pub Walk we have ever done. We asked the pre-registered walkers how much sponsorship they have raised before they set off, and after adding it all up, we have over £25,000 pledged to Pendleside Hospice, a mind-blowing amount in these tough economical times. And these pledges are totals before Gift Aid, which is reclaimed tax and can boost funds raised by up to 20 percent."
PPW Paul, administrator and webmaster, said, "I'm so proud and pretty emotional really. To think that people of all ages just threw themselves into raising money for the Hospice, to help those going through what is probably one of the most traumatic times of their lives. This year we've really concentrated on getting walkers to raise sponsorship, and £25,000 is an amazing amount of funds for the hospice. Then on top of that, the Rotary guys have helped keep costs down to an absolute minimum, so we have over £5,000 left over from registrations, all of which will also go to charity. A possible £30,000 raised for charity in one day of walking and drinking? A truly epic result. I'm stunned."
He added, "There are so many people I need to thank from the bottom of my heart. So I'm enjoying the belated sunshine now, and touring the Pendle Pub Walk pubs, trying to find - and have a drink - with every last one of them. Thank you every one who knew we could do it and got involved. And we'll see you next year."
